VSGI Celebrates 10 Years

VSGI celebrated its 10‑year anniversary on July 11, 2024, with a special event held at Katherine Johnson Hall on George Mason University’s Science and Technology Campus in Manassas. The celebration brought together past and present resident game design companies, along with members of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce and the Mason community. Dean Rick Davis of the College of Visual and Performing Arts opened the event with remarks highlighting the Virginia Serious Game Institute’s impact and importance to the college. Directors James Casey and Sang Nam shared a 10-year history of VSGI, highlighting the institute’s many accomplishments over the past decade. Mason Korea Serious Game Institute Opens

In November 2024, Mason Korea hosted the opening ceremony for its Korea Serious Game Institute (KSGI), marking the global expansion of George Mason University’s Virginia Serious Game Institute (VSGI). KSGI is set to lead innovation in Korea’s gaming industry while advancing the use of serious games in education, therapy, and social awareness.

Thomas Dolby Masterclass at Mason

Thomas Dolby, VSGI Pioneer in Residence, gave a lecture and Masterclass at George Mason University on February 24th! Mr. Dolby is an English musician, producer, entrepreneur, and teacher. He came to prominence in the 1980s, releasing hit singles including “She Blinded me with Science” (1982) and “Hyperactive!” (1984). He also worked in production and as a session musician. In the 1990s, he founded a Silicon Valley sound technology company, Beatnik, whose technology was even used to create the Nokia tune. James Casey Presents at Tencent Games Developers Conference in Shenzhen

James Casey recently and former Director Dr. Scott Martin visited the 2019 Tencent Games Developers Conference, where they created and showed the presentation: “So, why do you want to create a Serious Game?” This was a fantastic chance to showcase the VSGI and the incredible work and projects created by our residents.
