Mason Game & Technology Academy Summer Camps

MGTA is the Community Outreach Youth Program for the University’s Virginia Serious Game Institute (VSGI) and the Mason Computer Game Design Program.  Courses are developed and taught by Mason faculty, who are assisted by advanced Game Design and Computer Science university students – many of whom have start up companies of their own at VSGI, serving as mentors to the next wave of tech entrepreneurs.

MGTA Honors Program: Envision Game & Technology Academy for Middle School Students

MGTA, in partnership with Envision, will provide middle school students the opportunity to explore their interests and develop the skill sets they will need for more advanced studies in game development and design. Students will have the choice of six topic areas –  3D Game Design and Entrepreneurship; Foundations of Digital Art; Art & Animation: Foundations of 3D Studio Max; Mobile App Development for Android; Virtual Reality Game Development; or Story-based Game Design for Girls. This unique curriculum incorporates the entrepreneurship, team dynamics, and game production philosophies of the renowned Virginia Serious Game Institute (VSGI). The learn-by-doing curriculum, workshops, and simulations are specifically designed to challenge students’ abilities, inspire their creativity, and provide a solid foundation in game design and creation.   Students will be able to register for a residential option and stay in the Mason dorms for an enhanced pre-college experience. Week-long commuter and residential options will be available.

MGTA Honors Program: Envision Game & Technology Academy for High School Students

MGTA, in partnership with Envision, will provide the rare opportunity for High School students to engage with university professors from the game industry, and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students from the nationally-recognized Computer Game Design Program at Mason, and delve deeply into all the roles and responsibilities found in the serious and entertainment game design and production industry. The unique curriculum will also infuse aspects of entrepreneurship, team dynamics, and game production, enhanced by industry guest speakers, evening game jams, and tours of the nationally renowned Virginia Serious Game Institute. Students will customize their experience by selecting one of three tracks:  3D Game Design, Art & Animation, and Mobile App Development. Students will be able to register for a residential option and stay in the Mason dorms for an enhanced pre-college experience.

MGTA offers a limited amount of scholarships each year to students from military families and to students in need. If you would like to be considered to receive a scholarship, follow the instructions on our Scholarship Application Form and we will contact recipients before the start of summer classes.
